Haptic Buttons, They’re Not Just for iPhones Any More!

Solid-state buttons with haptic feedback are not just for the iPhone anymore, if a new rumor out of China is correct. Weibo-based leaker Instant Digital says Apple has plans to equip not only the iPhone, but also future iPad and Apple Watch models.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen reports claiming Apple’s “Project Bongo” would bring solid-state buttons to the iPhone 15 Pro in 2023 and then the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024, but neither rumor came to fruition. Now Instant Digital says Apple never fully gave up on the idea, and is not only working on the buttons not only for a future iPhone, but for the “for the entire product line,” including the iPad and Apple Watch.

Bongo project restarted, not only iPhone, Apple began to explore tactile button solutions for the entire product line, including iPad, Apple Watch.

The leaker says that the cost of production for the solid-state buttons isn’t what’s kept the project from coming to completions, but instead it’s the issue of “mistouches,” since an accurate response from the buttons isn’t always guaranteed. The current button design is reportedly integrated directly into the frame, providing no rebound when clicked. However, Apple is said to be working to more closely replicate the experience of a traditional mechanical button.

The project was reportedly put on hold while Apple brought work on display and battery technology advancements for upcoming models to the front burner. While work on the fearture is apparently gearing up once more, the feature is still not expected to arrive in the iPhone 17 lineup, according to Instant Digital.
