Apple TV to Support Thread 1.4 Update in tvOS 26 This Fall

Apple TV set-top boxes will gain support for Thread 1.4 when tvOS 26 is released this fall, according to network analysis by Matter Alpha. The publications discovered the update in the tvOS 26 beta, which was released to developers on Monday. The discovery indicates Apple’s upcoming HomePod Software 26 will also provide support for the latest version of the protocol.

Thread Border Routers usually broadcast essential information via mDNS technologies. Matter Alpha spotted that the updated Apple TV 4K runs a Thread Border Router with the “tv” key as 1.4, which refers to the version of the Thread spec. In comparison, a HomePod running software 18.5 is still on 1.3.

Thread 1.4 fixes an issue in previous versions related to competing Thread networks, in which border routers from different manufacturers would create separate networks, fragmenting user’s smart home setup. The new version ensures all Thread 1.4 devices join a single mesh network instead.

The protocol also provides better coverage with Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections, meaning your Thread network should be more flexible in home spaces where its signals barely reach. In addition, the protocol update also gives Thread devices direct internet access, enabling features like smart shades that adjust based on weather conditions or lights that change color with sports scores.

HomePod, which uses a fork of tvOS, will likely gain Thread 1.4 support in the upcoming HomePod Software 26.

Thread 1.4 was officially released in September 2024 and includes improved testing tools for manufacturers plus better network visibility for troubleshooting.
